Walk, just a young man, head hang low
Pain beneath his eyes, Anchor in his soul
Poised to heal the blind eyes of the world
Reaching deep inside longing to unfurl
But I can see your memories
Past the thoughts that hold you back
And through your dreams and your enemies
There's a light that shines beyond the black
Step by step, no matter how we planned
It all begins to fade like footprints in the sand
But if you're brave to ask and content without control
The plight will come to pass and illuminate your role
And I am one with all that breathes
By the living as you live inside your dream
Beyond the whispers weaving pictures for your mind
There lies the truth, you are nothing but sublime
So spread your wings young man and glide
This endless ocean is your steed
Always be open to the ever-changing tides
and time will water all the visions that you seed
Walk, just a young man coupled with the sky
Sewn into the earth, God behind his eyes
He says life is a gift, and I believe it to be true
So won't you take some time to sit to find the gift inside of you
'The Gift' initially came to me as the melody, from which I built the song. I find it interesting how there is actually no lyrical chorus, but it is more like a poem. The chorus is, rather, this melody that allows the listener a moment of introspection.
During the time when this song came I was going through some seriously hard times internally, struggling with depression and feeling lost. To be completely vulnerable, I was suicidal. And so this song was written over the course of two years as a healing piece, to meet the challenged individual (in this case, the young man).
It speaks from the perspective of God, witnessing this young man as God says "I can see your memories and past the thoughts that hold you back."
Then goes on to speak of impermanence: "No matter how we planned it all begins to fade like footprints in the sand" which is said to remember that all of our experience is so unique because it fades away just as it arrives. The truth underneath this woven web of pictures for the mind is that YOU are sublime. YOU are precious. And YOU have a gift to bring into this world. So spread your wings and glide, be open to constant change, and all the seeds of vision you plant will be watered by time and come to fruition.
The song resolves as it speaks of the same young man grounded in the earth and coupled with the sky, truly connected, bringing the teaching of 'The Gift' encouraging YOU, the listener, to find the gift inside of you.
I hope this song hits deep for you, and that it brings about sense of hope and connection. It is intended to meet those who are experiencing trouble in their lives where they are, and remind them that, though it may be dark, there is always light, and we can always continue forward bringing our gifts within this gift of life.
Thank you for listening. I would be honored to hear from you. How did this song make you feel? What was your experience? Has it helped you or someone else in some way?
With love,
Derek
